British or American: the Battle for Pancake Recipe Supremacy

Today, there are two main types of pancake recipes that people have grown accustomed to: the British pancake recipe and the American Pancake recipe.

Which pancake recipe really is better? In order to answer this question, we must delve into the distinguishing characteristics of the two pancake recipes.

Remember that the pancake recipe does not only include the ingredients but the method of cooking and the manner of consumption.

Here are the characteristics of the American pancake recipe:

The American pancake recipe is probably the more famous of the two.

This pancake recipe consists of different measures of milk, flour, and eggs mixed together to form a thick batter.

The product of this pancake recipe is thicker than the British variety because of the addition of rising agents.

This same rising agent causes bubbles to rise to the surface of the pancake during cooking, signaling the fact that the pancake is ready to be flipped.

The pancake recipe calls for the pancake to be eaten at breakfast with a topping of butter and or maple syrup.

3 or more pieces are usually served stacked in restaurants.

Some of the variations on the American pancake recipe call for the addition of different ingredients to make the pancake more flavorful.

Some additional ingredients in the American pancake recipe are fruits, cheese, or meats. The additional ingredients are often mixed into the batter, thus incorporating and fusing the flavors to the resulting pancake.

That, my friend, is the American pancake recipe.

What about the British pancake recipe?

The British pancake recipe consists of the same key ingredients of flour, milk and eggs. One key difference however, is that the ingredients are mixed in a proportion that forms a rather runny batter very much unlike the thick batter of the American pancake recipe.

No rising agent is added, so the pancake remains thin when it is fried. This makes it similar in thickness to the French crepe.

British pancakes are traditionally eaten as a snack. The British pancake recipe calls for the product to be eaten sweet with a topping of sugar and lemon juice.

It can be served as a main course, however, if it is served rolled around a stuffing.

The stuffing is another distinguishing feature of the British pancake recipe. Where the American pancake recipe calls for additional ingredients to be put into the batter and then cooked, the British pancake recipe calls for the pancake and the stuffing to be cooked separately and then combined.

This creates for an interesting layering of tastes and textures.

Which pancake recipe, however, could be called supreme?

The answer is a paradox unto itself: both and neither.

Each pancake recipe has evolved from its own history. The cultures of the people call for this type of pancake and so, a pancake recipe is formulated to adapt to that culture. To say that one type of pancake recipe is better than the other one is like saying a race is superior to another.

The two are actually incomparable because they both have their advantages and disadvantages. They both have strengths, and they both have weaknesses. Same as human beings, these two pancake recipes, are in fact, equal.

However, being equals does not mean that they are the same in every manner. Of course, one pancake recipe rejoices in a specific setting and the other pancake recipe is perfect for other situations. In fact, they are not really equal. They are merely… incomparable.
